Local SEO Guide: How to Rank in the Google Map Pack
The Google Map Pack is the box of three local businesses with a map that appears when someone searches for things like "dentist near me" or "plumber in Pune". It sits above the normal results and gets a large share of the clicks and calls. To rank in it, you need a well-built Google Business Profile, steady reviews, accurate listings across the web, and a website that clearly supports the same services and location. This guide covers what Google says matters, and then the practical steps to act on it. How Google decides who appears Google states that local results are based mainly on three things: 1. Relevance: how well your profile matches what the person searched for. 2. Distance: how far you are from the searcher, or from the location they typed. 3. Prominence: how well known your business is, based on reviews, links, mentions and general web presence. You can't change distance. You can improve relevance and prominence, and that is where the work is. Step 1: Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile Your profile is the single biggest lever. Treat it as a landing page, not a form to fill once. • Pick the right primary category. This is among the strongest relevance signals. Choose the most specific one that describes your main service, not a broad one. Add secondary categories only if they are true. • Use your real business name. Adding keywords to the name breaks Google's rules and can get your profile suspended. • Add your address or service area correctly. If customers don't visit you, set a service area and hide the address. • Write a clear description that says what you do, who you serve and where, in plain language. • List every service and product with short descriptions. • Set accurate hours, including holidays. • Add a phone number you actually answer, and a booking or appointment link if you offer one. • Choose the right attributes, such as wheelchair accessible or women-led, only if they apply. Step 2: Upload real photos and videos Profiles with fresh, real images tend to look more trustworthy and get more engagement. Add your storefront, interior, team, work in progress and finished results. Avoid stock photos. Add new ones every month or so. Step 3: Get reviews, and reply to them Reviews affect both ranking and whether someone chooses you once they see you. • Ask every happy customer, right after the job. Send a direct review link by WhatsApp, SMS or email. • Make it easy. One tap is better than instructions. • Never buy or fake reviews. Google removes them and can penalise the profile. • Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and specifically. Mention the service where it feels natural. • Handle bad reviews calmly. A professional response often matters more than the rating itself. Steady reviews over time look better than a burst followed by silence. Step 4: Fix your NAP and clean up citations NAP stands for Name, Address and Phone number. Your details should be identical everywhere your business is listed: your website, Google, Bing, Apple Maps, Facebook, LinkedIn and relevant directories. • Audit existing listings and correct old addresses, numbers and names. • Remove or merge duplicates. • Add listings on trusted general and industry-specific directories. • Keep abbreviations consistent. Don't write "Road" in one place and "Rd." in another without reason. Inconsistent data confuses Google about which details are correct, and that can hold you back. Step 5: Build a location-focused website Your site supports your profile. It should clearly tell Google what you do and where. • Create a page for each core service, and a page for each location you serve if you have real presence or customers there. Don't produce hundreds of near-identical "city pages" with only the name swapped. • Put your service and city in titles, headings and URLs naturally, such as "Teeth Whitening in Andheri". • Embed your Google Map on the contact page and show your address in plain text. • Add LocalBusiness schema with your NAP, hours and service area. • Add local proof: photos of real jobs, client names with permission, and local case studies. • Make it mobile-friendly and fast. Most local searches happen on phones. Link your Business Profile to the matching page, usually your homepage or a specific location page. Step 6: Earn local links and mentions Prominence grows when other local sources reference you. • Local news and community websites • Chambers of commerce and trade associations • Sponsored local events or charities • Supplier and partner pages • Local bloggers or influencers who've used your service A few relevant local links are worth more than many unrelated ones. Step 7: Post updates and answer questions Use Google Business Profile posts for offers, events and news. Posts may not move rankings much, but they give customers current information and show the profile is active. Monitor the Q&A section and answer questions yourself before someone else does. Step 8: Track what's happening Rankings change by location, sometimes block to block. Checking from your own phone isn't reliable. • Use the Performance report in your Business Profile to see searches, calls, direction requests and website clicks. • Use a geo-grid rank tracker if you can. It shows your ranking at points across your area. • Track calls and form leads by source, so you know which profile and pages bring business. • Review Google Search Console for local landing pages. A simple local SEO checklist • Profile claimed, verified and complete • Accurate primary and secondary categories • Services, hours and description added • 10 or more real photos uploaded • Review request process running weekly • All reviews answered • NAP identical across the web • Service and location pages live • LocalBusiness schema added • Local links and mentions in progress • Monthly tracking in place Mistakes that keep businesses out of the Map Pack • Stuffing keywords into the business name • Using a virtual office or P.O. box address that doesn't qualify • Choosing too many or the wrong categories • Ignoring reviews or buying fake ones • Different phone numbers or addresses across listings • Copying the same page for every suburb • Never updating the profile after setup Frequently asked questions What is the Google Map Pack? It's the group of three local business results with a map that Google shows for local searches such as "salon near me". It appears above standard organic listings and drives many calls, visits and direction requests. How do I rank higher in the Google Map Pack? Complete your Google Business Profile, choose accurate categories, collect and answer reviews, keep your name, address and phone number consistent across listings, and build a website with clear service and location pages. How long does local SEO take? Quick profile fixes can show movement in a few weeks. In competitive areas, steady growth in reviews, links and content usually takes three to six months. Do reviews affect local rankings? Yes. Review quantity, quality, recency and your responses all contribute to prominence, and they influence whether customers choose you. Can I rank in the Map Pack without a physical shop? Yes, if you're a service-area business. Set your service areas and hide your address. Ranking beyond the area near you is harder, though. How much does local SEO cost in India? It depends on your competition, number of locations and the work needed. Ask any provider for a written scope that lists profile work, citations, content and reporting, and avoid anyone who guarantees the number one spot. Does posting on Google Business Profile help? Posts keep your profile fresh and informative for customers. Their direct ranking impact is small, but they can improve engagement and conversions. Ready to get into the top three? We run local SEO services that cover profile optimization, review systems, citations and location pages, with monthly reporting on calls and leads.
